OOC: Set just outside Lorien OK with you? Set April 30, 2941 Third Age

IC: It was not often that Celeborn was able to leave Lothlorien for his own personal pleasure and even rarer that he went without his wife. But he had missed his grandchildren and even his son-in-law. So he headed out of Lothlorien with a small group of guards as an escort. His lips twitched in amusement at that. He did not need to be babysat but he also knew that it was highly dangerous to be outside of the Goldenwoods, even with an armed escort like he had. Not many knew the reason that evil stayed so far away from Lothlorien. And he wasn’t inclined to let it known why.

Nenya had been a source of contention between him and his wife but he had to admit that the Elven Ring did keep the woods rather well protected. And if anyone found out who bore the Elven Rings of Power, his wife could be in serious trouble. That was something that Celeborn planned on making sure never happened. He knew that he could not survive without her and he would likely fade from grief. They had been married for so long that he could not imagine life without her nor did he want to.

His horse was a nearly pure white stallion, proud and regal, much like its master, though Celeborn thought of his horse as a companion rather than a simple steed. This horse had been one he raised from a colt, the child of his previous mare that had gotten too old to ride anymore. He clicked his tongue and urged the horse out into the plains surrounding Lorien, the guards trailing behind him, giving their Lord space but being close enough to come to his aid easily.

She had been on the road for who knew how long! The days seemed to go by as slowly as rising bread at this point and she still hadn’t found anything worth the trouble of hunting. A few small fawns and that was it, not worth the trouble. The she-Elf had debts to pay in Rohan, a few in Bree and one in Gondor. If she couldn’t find a stag to bring in the money she was doomed to work it off in the small towns for little pay. It’ll take forever to work off my debt! And if luck wasn’t kind to her, as it if had ever been, she would be working for the next four years… stuck in the same place for all eternity! Her desire to travel and see Middle-Earth and all the wonders it held was too strong for her to allow that. I have to find a nice prize to trade at the market.

Stamping out the fire she had made, Ginger gathered her things and set out, her white oaken bow in her left hand. The day was bright, beautiful and clear at least where she was. Not far off dark clouds hung over the Misty Mountains, telling her that it was pouring when it should have been raining. All the troubles that happened in those mountains were only part of the wonders of Middle-Earth. She remembered, while she stayed in Gondor, reading something about rock monsters in the mountains, constantly changing the shape and paths. So far the ones she traveled were still there or had been blocked by random avalanches… which reminded her that the time to visit her friends and ‘family’ in Rohan was drawing near. A couple of months ahead and they seemed to be approaching rather quickly!

Looking to the sky she searched for the familiar shape of her companion, Dénor. The owl was her friend, the only one she could talk to and not feel like she was being a nuisance. Her chatty personality seldom came through accept when he was around. When he wasn’t she was quiet and snapped at just about anything, even if your intentions were harmless. There was something about the bird that made her feel safe and at home. Quietly her feet tread the familiar path as she reflected on these things. Once in a while she would trip on a stone and ungracefully collect her balance.

It was mid-afternoon before she finally spotted something. It was mature, it had the gracefulness of its race and it was Elvish. Pausing in her steps she hesitated. There were enough to make her nervous. Seldom did she venture into the woods of Lothlórien. The she-Elf preferred to stay away from her kind, they seemed to hold a high opinion of what and Elf should be and she often failed them, plus they were all stuck up in their own particular way, something she assumed was bred into them from the moment of birth. Besides, Dénor had enough ego to go around, she didn’t need more. As they drew closer she was pretty sure she had been spotted, so it would be futile to duck into the tall grass on either side of the road.

Horses and Elves! What an unpleasant combination. And look, master is right in their path. The poor thing![/color] The eagle owl thought as he circled the entire posy. Should he get involved? Oh, why not! It would be such fun. Lowering his position with a simple tilt of the wing, Dénor flew down lower to the Elven parade. Carefully he placed himself just behind the one with the bright hair, one Celeborn by name – if the owl indeed had known his name – and flowed behind silently. How long would it be? Oh too long for him!

Bold, or just plain stupid, Dénor on silent wings gently took hold of Celeborn’s shoulder. It was stiff, strong and could definitely support his oversized self as he settled. Why not play the good guy for once?[/i] The owl thought deviously, having no true intention of staying long. What a surprise he is in for! Dénor hooted lightly in the Elf’s ear…

out of cookies: It is fine! <3 I made it mid-afternoon if that is also alright. Dénor has his own way of doing things... I hope everything in the post was alright!

Celeborn had noticed in the distance a fire and thought it odd that someone would be so close to Lothlorien. He was not concerned that they were there. As Lord of Lorien he could tell when someone had entered the woods but since he was just outside his realm, it wasn’t any of his concern. They were far enough away to not possibly set his woods on fire, not even if the strongest wind blew on the fire. Though it was on his way towards Rivendell, but he still had to decide what route he was going to take. But there would be time for that later.

He had also noticed an owl flying around, which though strange since owls tended to be nocturnal was not rare. It was likely hunting for something to eat. So Celeborn ignored it, not knowing that it was actually someone's companion. The fire was eventually put out, which meant however had lit had decided to move on. He was curious as to what they were planning on doing but not as a concerned Elf Lord but rather as a nosy Elf that had stuck his nose into far too many places he shouldn’t have when he was younger.

But he was startled when he felt a sizable weight settle on his shoulder and before he could look to see what it was, a hoot sounded right in his ear, causing him to jump. He had enough balance that he stayed on his horse. He turned his head to see the owl and stared at it, raising his eyebrow inquisitively at the bird. Not many owls landed on the shoulder of a random person. He had the feeling that this was not just a random bird. It seemed more like someone's pet or companion. He did stop his horse to stare at the bird.

It was true, Dénor did prefer the night to the day, but what owl wouldn’t? To be out in the day it was a tad brighter than a night with a full moon, but it was practically the same thing as he spent most of his time between Bree and Rohan, which left much time to be under the cover of the clouds of the Misty Mountains. His master felt that any time day or night was a good time to travel… she also annoyingly liked talking about things that he couldn’t understand, not understanding the language of the peoples of Middle-Earth in general! Oh what a prize it would be indeed if he could speak. But, all that was to be left as the Elf gave a start to his sudden presence. It amused Dénor, and he was sure to have it show in his large orange eyes as the Elf looked at him. The feeling of stopping weighed greatly on his mind and as he looked around he found that they had in fact stopped.

Oh, how annoying and so predictable. I thought Elves were friendly towards creatures. I guess my suspicions were wrong. But of course they were! How silly of me. Uh-oh, here comes master![/i] His master, Ginger, was approaching the stopped horses, obviously unsure of what was going on. Surely she had seen! Surely she would be brave enough to at least ask for him back?

The she-Elf had indeed seen what had taken place. The idea that her bird, her Dénor would just go up to a random stranger – an Elf at that – and just land on his shoulder like it was the most natural thing in all Middle-Earth. Bone-Headed bird… he is always trying to get me into some sort of trouble! If it isn’t trying to rip someone’s throat out in a bar its … well it isn’t this![/i]  As Ginger shyly approached the horses she clenched her bow tighter and a free hand slid to her side, naturally as if she had nothing to conceal, and waited for the Elven Company to say something in a language she didn’t understand… or thought she didn’t understand. Oh, why me!?[/i] She thought, swallowing hard.

The horse was bright white, the Elf riding the stallion was just as bright it seemed. His face was very much Elvish and very much stiff, like all the other Elves she had ever met – which were few and far between. His company seemed the same way accept they seemed a bit on edge of being approached by one of their kin… if indeed she was related to … these particular Elves. For a long while she didn’t say anything, she didn’t have the courage until she realized this.

Ah… I think…” Her voice cracked from nervousness. Clearing it she went on, “I think you have my bird, Sir.” Politeness seemed to be in order today. However, she was a time-bomb if he started to insult her.

Celeborn had the distinct impression that the bird was laughing at him, or would have if the owl had the right anatomy for it. Instead its eyes shone with amusement at him startling. The corners of his lips curled up in slight amusement at the bird's reacting to him stopping his horse. He was a bit conscientious of a bird sitting on his shoulder like it was the most natural thing to do so. He shook his head in amusement at the bird's antics.

He looked up at the approach of an elven female, though she seemed nervous around them and the horses. He gestured for his escort to stay back and he regarded her as she neared him. He waited for her to speak and was a bit surprised to hear her speak not in Sindarin but Westron. He frowned slightly but her words caused him to smile slightly. "I fear that it is more the case that your bird has me. Does your fine feathered friend do this often?" He spoke in Westron, since she had used it. It was not a language he spoke very often, mostly speaking in Sindarin or occasionally in Quenya to his wife.

Celeborn felt an itch to give the bird a scratch on the head or at least touch it, so he slowly let his hand approach the owl. He watched it for any sign of aggression or displeasure, keeping eye contact with it without challenging it. "What is the bird's name?" He glanced at the female before bringing his gaze back to the bird.

The Elf on the horse was indeed a strange one. He seemed kind and well to do, probably an Elvish Lord or something. Dénor blinked at his master, she was nervous. He watched as the Elf watched her approach, speak and then go silent. It hadn’t been long since Dénor had taken his orange orbs away from the Elf, who even though he spoke to his master, still seemed to be looking at him. Was the Elf suspicious of him? He must divert that, but how…

Ginger allowed a small smile, “I fear that it is more the case that your bird has me.” Yes, it did seem so, “Does your fine feathered friend do this often?” She wondered if she should answer honestly. It hadn’t been a few moments when she noticed that the Elf was eyeing Dénor and moving his hand in an attempt to touch the owl. What happened next surprised Ginger, so much though she thought that the owl sitting on the Elf’s shoulder wasn’t hers for a moment?

Dénor had noticed the Noble Elf raise his hand and watch him carefully for any hostile movements from the large bird. Dénor looked in the gray-blue eyes and didn’t see a challenge. Pity, he should be challenged.[/i] Dénor thought, his eyes narrowing slightly before turning into large orange orbs of innocence. Stretching his neck as far as it would go he gave the hand a sniff before nuzzling it.

A chirping-coo type noise came from her bird and all the she-Elf could do was stare. A faint blush appeared on Ginger’s cheeks as she replied, “He… does not. It… is the first time I’ve seen him do this.” She didn’t want to go on and explain what normally happened with those wickedly sharp talons around. “Dénor is his name.” What was going on inside that bird brained idiot!? He didn’t like others! He never behaved like this to anyone inside or outside a tavern.

The bird met his gaze and narrowed his eyes slightly but then stretched his head forward, sniffing at his hand before nuzzling it. Celeborn took that to mean that the bird would allow him to touch him. So Celeborn used his long fingers to gently stroke the owl's head, making sure not to cause any sudden movements that would startle the bird. He smiled softly and glanced at the she-elf, amused that she seemed as surprised by the bird's behavior as he was. There was a chirping-coo that came from the bird on his shoulder and Celeborn gave a soft chuckle. "I take it you approve, my friend?" He would not talk down to the bird.

Celeborn nodded slightly at the bird not doing this very often. "I assume his actions usually involve more beak snapping, talons gripping, and general screeching?" That is what most birds did, though he had never seen a bird this friendly before. He knew that people kept birds of prey for hunting and smaller birds for entertaining so this was hardly surprising. He hummed at the name. "Dénor? Does that mean anything?" He turned his attention more towards Dénor's owner. "I seem to have forgotten my manners. I am Celeborn, Lord of Lothlorien. It is a pleasure to meet you and Dénor, milady." He hoped for a name since it was only polite. He did incline his head to her since it was hard to do anything else on a horse and he didn't want upset a bird with a large beak inches away from his face.

Ginger was genuinely concerned for her bird’s mental health. He never did this, like, ever! This was new, and the she-Elf knew he was playing up to something. He was going to cause her trouble. The only other time that she could remember him being this friendly with anyone was when he was still a chick and under two years of age. So, it wasn’t that this was new; it was just very off putting. Right, what is the brute planning to do to me?![/i] She wondered, surprise still on her face as Dénor allowed the stranger to touch the feathers on the top of his head.

I take it you approve, my friend?” Dénor gave a small hoot, unsure of what the Elf had said. He didn’t honestly like the elf touching his head, but he couldn’t over react now. The Elf he was perched on was probably getting ideas in his head that he was a gentle, tame owl without an Ego. So long as things don’t get too friendly and he starts to think that he can pet me when he likes. That was something Dénor would not tolerate from anyone; the idea that people could take advantage of him when he wasn’t looking. There were consequences for those who thought like that. It was at this particular time that Dénor was cast into his past, remembering the first time someone had taken advantage of him. It had been an unpleasant time…

And blood… you left out blood.” Ginger replied, “He starts most bar fights.” That was part of her debt in Gondor. Dénor had gotten it into his head that he was being threatened by some young soldier and had nearly torn his face to pieces. Ginger, being the type of Elf who apologies and says she’ll pay for the damage, didn’t realize how much it would cost to get the young solider back to working condition! But in that situation she felt as though she was being taken advantage of… a feeling she couldn’t quite shake. “What? Oh, Dénor means Brave in the Rohiric tongue.” She smiled, remembering asking Léofwyn what a good, brave name would be.

I seem to have forgotten my manners. I am Celeborn, Lord of Lothlórien. It is a pleasure to meet you and Dénor, milady.” Ginger was taking aback by this. Her mouth suddenly became dry and she felt as though her voice had never been. She probably looked a little pale as well. He inclined his head towards her, expecting the same. “… ah…” She squeaked, then cleared her throat with an ahem and then replied, “Ginger…” She should have said something else, but her mind couldn’t recall what it was… oh how stupid she felt not being able to remember.

My Lord…” There! She thought of it. It took a while of awkward silence, but she ended with a small, curt half bow.

Celeborn wasn’t sure if the hoot was an answer to his question but the owl didn’t seem to mind too much. But after a bit, he let his hand slowly drop away, with a pleased and slightly amused smile on his face. "Thank you for the privilege, Dénor." He was serious but he still had a soft grin on his face. This seemed to not be a tame animal and he realized this and acknowledged it.

He chuckled again at hearing that the owl started quite a few bar fights. He looked at the bird with amusement. "Protective of you? Or is he just really feisty?" Either one he supposed could be a possibility. He hummed slightly at hearing the meaning of the name. "Brave? I could see that as a befitting name for such a fine and noble animal." Yes, the owl's name was certainly appropriate. "Especially if he decides to land on strangers' shoulders very often." He grinned in amusement.

She paled at hearing who he was and he felt a bit sorry that he caused her discomfort. But he couldn’t exactly change his name or his position. But she said her name was Ginger, which was a rather curious name for an Elf. But the only indication he gave of what he thought of the oddness of her name was the briefest raising of an elegant silver eyebrow. "As I said, a pleasure, Ginger." He gave her a rather easy smile, something that was admittedly rare on him.

The Owl chirped in reply. Now that I’ve thrown everyone off, what shall I do next? Dénor thought as Celeborn lowered his hand back into position. According to Dénor they, Celeborn and the guards, had out lived their welcome on his territory. But none of them seemed to realize that nor did they care. This irked Dénor more than anything. They’ve had their fun, now they need to leave. With skilled precision the large owl glided silently to his master’s shoulder and rested there, his orange eyes glaring at the company before them.

Normally the added weight of Dénor would have caused Ginger to shuffle and readjust. But, after the seemingly endless years of having him just make himself comfortable on her shoulder, Ginger really felt no immediate need to adjust for the extra weight. “He’s just … feisty.” The she-Elf said with a light smile. Shifting on her feet she thought about how talkative she was being, considering she was never – well almost never – around her own kind half as much. Although he gave her light smiles, there was still something about him that seemed a bit stiff. “Well, yeah… I guess you could say that.” Dénor was brave, stupid sometimes, but brave! Léofwyn had one day gone as far as to make to observation that he was her opposite and that they completed each other.

To his grin, Ginger responded with a gentle smile. “It is indeed a very rare thing for him to act that way.” She wanted to add that he should feel privileged that he Dénor didn’t rip his face apart. When she observed his stature, she silently decided that it wouldn’t be an improvement by any stretch of the imagination. Besides, the guards looked the same as he did. Very fair haired and stiff.

There was an awkward silence as Lord Celeborn once again said that it was a privilege that he met her. His easy smile made her feel a bit warm inside, a quick image flickered across her memory and she blinked it away. Maybe she had seen that look on someone’s face before, someone familiar, but Ginger didn’t make it a point to remember faces unless they were attached to a pleasing memory. “Right… well, I can see that you on your way… I apologize for interrupting your tip. We’ll be heading out if that is alright with you.” There was business she had to tend to, if she didn’t see it done she would be in big trouble.

Stepping back of the road she ran her eyes over the terrain, grasping her bearings and plotting a course of action in her mind.

OOC: He's going to be nosy :D

IC: Celeborn smiled slightly as Denor chirped as he lowered his hand. This bird was truly magnificent and yet was obviously still very wild and untamed. But it would appear that the owl's visit to the Elf Lord's shoulder had come to an end as Celeborn suddenly had the weight on his shoulder leave. It was a bit odd but this day was rather odd in general. From owls landing on his shoulder to an Elf with a not very Elvish name.

He hummed slightly in response to her words about the owl being feisty. "I can see that." His baritone voice was full of humor at this moment, which was rather odd for him since he rarely let many emotions show when he wasn’t around his family. The only one he truly let all his emotions, good and bad, along with everything else about him was his beloved wife. It was hard to hide anything from her, between having married to the woman for several thousand years and her being able to read minds and hearts of men.

There was something strange about this woman, and not just her odd name. Celeborn made a quick decision to delay his trip, and possibly forgo it completely for now. He would first see if she need help either going somewhere or in some other way. Then perhaps, he might head back home to talk to his wife to see what she said and maybe saw in her mirror. "Do you need help getting somewhere? I know the surrounding area fairly well." He easily moved his horse closer to her, but still kept a polite distance away.

It was hard not to hear the humor in his voice. If Ginger knew that it was something that didn’t happen often, she would have blushed and looked away. But, she didn’t know Lord Celeborn very well, having just met him he was giving off a rather uncomfortable feeling despite having just met him and his pleasantries. What were really off setting were the guards, the stone faced guards. Much like the guards in Gondor, but at least they speak to you.[/i] Elvish customs were beyond Ginger, and she honestly didn’t mind. It seemed that time was going to take itself slowly, for just as she was about to take her leave Lord Celeborn spoke again, “Do you need help getting somewhere?

Startled a bit, the she-Elf raised her eyebrows but before she could answer he continued, “I know the surrounding area fairly well.” And she was sure he did. After all this was his land right? “Um…” Ginger said quietly, Dénor’s claws were digging into her shoulder expressing his desire to be finished with Celeborn. She ignored him, “Well, I’ve traveled up and down this road several times. I think I can manage on my own. Thank you.” There was nothing he could do that would erase the debts she had to pay… unless he let her hunt in his wood, which she figured she would get away with until some stone-faced guard caught her and questioned her, and when her answer wasn’t sufficient she would end up being taken to Celeborn and his Wife (yes, she was well aware of The Lady of the Wood, as most called her.) A witch perhaps… but probably not as terrible as the traveling gypsies would put it between Rohan and Gondor. After all, she had to be an Elf right?

I do apologize for wasting your time, Lord Celeborn, I must be going. It is a long ways to reach Isengard from here… But thank you anyways.” She bowed again. Dénor recognized the name of Isengard and flew from his master’s shoulder in the general direction of said place. “Oh my…” she muttered in Rohiric before casting another look at the Lord of Lothlórien and then making her way off the road following Dénor, who was now just a speck at the edge of her Elvish vision.

out of cookies;
I'm sorry! I couldn't think of anything else for conversation. HOWEVER I would love to find a date for this thread, um, perhaps some time in ... perhaps May? So I can add it to the Time-Line ^^b

OOC: So end of thread?

IC: It would seem that Ginger was surprised by his offer of help and Celeborn couldn’t help the slight smile that came onto his face. It seemed he was rather good at surprising this female, though he wasn’t sure why she would be so surprised about his behavior. Maybe it was that she didn’t expect his humor, which not many knew about outside his family and closest friends, like Haldir. But Celeborn had a feeling that it was more than that and it stemmed from the fact that she was fully an Elf and yet had a very human name.

She declined his offer for help and although he would have insisted normally, he held off and simply nodded his head in acceptance of her choice, though he frowned at hearing Isengard. What business did she have in Isengard with Saruman? But he said nothing about it and gave a slight bow. "May your travels be easy and may you find rest at the end of them." Then as she headed off, he raised his hand in a final farewell before turning to his escort.

"I need to talk with my wife." With a nod at their Lord, they headed off with him back where they came. Celeborn needed to talk to his wife about Ginger and if there was something that she was hiding or needed help with. It was very odd that she would have such a human name and many of her reactions to his were strange. His grandchildren could wait a few more days.
